What Is Eyebrow Transplantation?

Eyebrow transplantation is a procedure performed to restore eyebrows that have been lost, thinned, or are naturally sparse due to various reasons.

Eyebrows can thin or completely fall out over time due to reasons such as illness, medication use, and genetic factors. Eyebrows play an important role in facial aesthetics and in expressing our thoughts and emotions. Thinning or loss of eyebrows can lead to aesthetic concerns and psychological issues for individuals.

Eyebrow transplantation is a challenging operation but gives a successful result in experienced hands.

Why Do Our Eyebrows Fall Out?

Eyebrows can thin or fall out for many reasons. Some of these are:

  • Regularly plucking eyebrows is one of the biggest reasons for eyebrow loss. This procedure, done to shape the eyebrows, can lead to permanent eyebrow loss.
  • Alopecia Areata, a condition known in medical literature, can cause eyebrow loss. This disease, which affects not only the hair but also the eyebrows, beard, mustache, and other areas of the body, can result in eyebrow loss.
  • Makeup application to shape the eyebrows can lead to eyebrow loss.
  • Trichotillomania, a condition characterized by compulsive hair pulling, can cause eyebrow loss. There is a possibility that plucked eyebrows may not grow back.
  • Poor and unbalanced nutrition can affect hair and eyebrows. Vitamin, mineral, and iron deficiencies can lead to eyebrow loss.
  • Burns, accidents, and traumas can result in eyebrow loss.
  • Diseases such as thyroid disorders, Atopic dermatitis (a type of eczema), and similar conditions can lead to eyebrow loss.
  • The use of certain medications can cause eyebrow loss.

Who Can Get an Eyebrow Transplant?

Any man or woman who has completed their development, is in good general health, and has experienced eyebrow loss for various reasons, with sufficient donor area, can undergo eyebrow transplantation.

Eyebrow transplantation may not be recommended for patients with heart, diabetes, or hypertension in some cases.

Eyebrow Transplantation with the FUE Method

During eyebrow transplantation with the FUE method, hair follicles are taken from the area called the donor area. The hair follicles are transplanted to the eyebrow area. This method is the most commonly used hair transplantation technique today and is also the most suitable method for eyebrow transplantation. Hair follicles suitable for your eyebrows can be easily selected and extracted from the donor area.

Before the procedure, an experienced eyebrow transplant specialist determines from which angles the eyebrow will be transplanted. They calculate the density of the eyebrows according to the volume of the hair and determine the eyebrow area.

During the follicle harvesting process, healthy and eyebrow-compatible hair follicles are individually extracted using a micromotor. The harvested hair follicles are kept in a special solution to prevent damage. Canals are then opened in the recipient area, which has been anesthetized locally, and the harvested hair follicles are placed into these canals. Once the follicles are placed, the procedure is completed.

Precautions Before the Operation

All medications used must be reported to the clinic where the eyebrow transplant will be performed. The clinic will conduct a health check and blood test. Alcohol consumption should be stopped one week before the procedure. If blood thinners are used, they should be discontinued two weeks before the procedure. On the day of the procedure, clothing that can be opened from the front, such as a shirt, must be worn. The body should be rested with at least 8 hours of sleep before the operation, and a good breakfast should be eaten 2 hours before the procedure.

Postoperative Care

In the first week after eyebrow transplantation, the transplanted area should be protected from impacts and sunlight. If medication is prescribed, it should be taken regularly, and blood thinners should be avoided.

The transplanted eyebrows begin to grow within 3 months and complete their entire development and take their final form within a maximum of 1 year. Since the growth rate of the roots transplanted at the beginning is different, it may grow faster than normal eyebrows. Corrections can be made in these cases. The transplanted eyebrow adapts to its place over time and the growth rate returns to normal after 1 year.
